Common oil leak 5.3

The 5.3, 5.7, 6.0, 6.2 and 7.0 liter GM engines often leak at the rear main seal area. Technically the seal itself is usually not the culprit. General Motors uses a cover plate, on the rear of the engine, in which they mount the seal. Defective castings of engine blocks and these covers, often result in major oil leaks.

It sounds like a very common leak. As the one guy said where the oil cooler lines mount by the oil filter. It leaked on my '95 5.7 small block and now i just noticed it on my '07 6.0. when I had a mechanic check it out on the '95 he said it was "O" rings in the oil cooler block.

I popped the cap and it is bone dry inside so it  An oil leak may be noted on the ground where the vehicle is parked. However, many vehicles have plastic trays underneath the engine that may catch leaking oil 

Yes, the rear main seal leak is common, and I've heard a couple people claim that the oil pan leak is also common.

2002 chevy: I have a massive oil leak that..oil pan..5.3 liter… I have a massive oil leak that appears to be coming from the oil pan on my 2002 chevy silverado 5.3 liter. It is splashed all over the bottom of the engine front to back. I had the intake gasket changed 6 months ago, and just recently now have oil leak.
